The 4th challenge at the conference was presented by Mike Pirie, Associate Professor at the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (opens in a new tab), University of Bergen. Mike presented two challenges related to an iNaturalist-based workflow for field collection; 1. Trivial formatting/import issues and 2. Non-trivial taxonomy conflicts/ambiguity. Currently it’s difficult to verify the taxonomy and Mike was interested in hearing the community’s thoughts and experience on the same topic.
The questions the community were asked to discuss
In order to create an interactive conference evolving on discussions within the IrisBG community each presentation on the programme was concluding with a set of questions to be discussed in smaller groups.
- Pros and cons of different platforms?
- Demand for IrisBG import tool(s)?
- Protocols for incorporating new names?
- Need for a common taxonomy database?
