It’s Not on the Inventory List!: Tracking Plants in a Semi-naturalized Meadow | Julie Rotramel, Mt. Cuba Center

By IrisBG Team

Mt. Cuba Center on how to accession a meadow

The 3rd challenge at the conference was presented by Julie Rotramel, Plant recorder at Mt. Cuba Center (opens in a new tab). Julie presented a challenge where she was wondering how to keep track of plants in a naturalised meadow while maintaining the interest of the Plant Recorder, the Horticulture Staff, the Director of Collections and Education. The community found this task especially hard, but some good ideas came out of the session.

The questions the community were asked to discuss

In order to create an interactive conference evolving on discussions within the IrisBG community each presentation on the programme was concluding with a set of questions to be discussed in smaller groups.

  1. How might you manage plant records in the meadow while keeping in mind the needs of each of these interest groups? Can all of these needs be satisfied with one solution?
  2. What do you see as the value or purpose of maintaining provenance information in a naturalized setting?
  3. Given its existing functionality, how might you track additions to a naturalized planting accession in IrisBG beyond an entry in the item history? Could custom attributes help with this problem?
